Human Trafficking

While there has been a nation-wide push for healthcare workers to identify ‘victims of trafficking’ there has been little education on the distinction between trafficking and sex work, and the nurses role in offering evidence-based assessments, person-centered care, and useful/ safe referrals. The combination of hyper-vigilance of trafficking with limited education for nurses can lead to racial and class biases showing up in our nursing practice. Join us for a conversation with SWOP-LA (Sex worker outreach project) to learn more about the complexities of sex work, human trafficking, and how education can empower nurses and patients.

This module explores CSEC in depth, including the intersections of systems, community, and individual factors that make youth vulnerable to CSEC; red-flag assessment findings; and optimal care and treatment. Not only does this module give nurses the tools to recognize, assess, and treat a person experiencing CSE but also discusses trauma-informed care; how to navigate mandatory reporting and provides advocacy resources.
